On November 15th, 2018, our father, Dave Phelps, passed away. He had been sober for two years but on that day, he overdosed on fentanyl.
Our dad brought a light into the world that cannot be replaced. Whether it was through a smile, an intensely sarcastic joke, or a random act of kindness, he made people feel valued and loved. He wore many hats - father, brother, son, uncle, community volunteer, football coach, small business owner - and if you were lucky enough to know him, you got to witness the laughter and positivity he brought to every situation.
But on the inside, our dad struggled. For 30 years, he battled with an addiction to opioids, until they ultimately took his life. And he wasn’t alone - 2.7 million people in the United States have an opioid use disorder, and there were over 100,000 drug overdose deaths in the US in 2023.
Despite the widespread impact of the opioid epidemic, only 13 percent of people with drug use disorders receive any treatment, primarily due to the cost and stigmas associated with seeking recovery.
Our goal today and through the end of November is to help reduce the stigma surrounding treatment for opioid use disorder and to support an organization that is helping others who are struggling with addiction find the treatment they need. In honor of the 6th anniversary of our Dad’s passing, we’re encouraging donations to the National Alliance for Medication Assisted Recovery (NAMA Recovery), which offers support for those dealing with opioid use disorder to help them find effective treatment.
In addition to raising money for NAMA Recovery, we’re encouraging those who knew our dad to grow mustaches to help spread awareness for those battling opioid use disorder. Our dad donned mustaches for much of his life (too much if you ask his daughters and his wife, Ali) and this “Movember”, we’re honoring his memory by growing our mustaches in honor of his fight with addiction.
If you don’t have the means to donate or participate, please consider sharing this page to help raise awareness and reduce the stigma for patients in recovery.
And if you would like to learn more about the cause, please visit https://namarecovery.org/about/ or reach out to any of Dave’s children: Tyler, Alex, Connor, and Sammy.
